What the regions faced on 20 August 2024

A look back at a day of Russian drone damage in Ternopil and territorial claims in Donetsk Oblast.

What did the war look like from Ukraine's regions on 20 August 2024? Two different pressures appeared in the reports: strikes on infrastructure far from the front, and Russian advances and claims in Donetsk Oblast.

Ternopil: a hazard beyond the front line

On 20 August 2024, Russian drones struck an industrial facility in Ternopil, causing a large fire and an increased concentration of chlorine in the air. Residents were urged to remain indoors. The episode showed that the consequences of strikes on infrastructure can reach civilians in a city well away from the fighting, and that local response then means practical public-safety guidance rather than only damage assessment.

Donetsk Oblast: a run of claims

In the east, the same day brought a Russian claim that its forces had taken control of the settlement of New York in Donetsk Oblast. The claim was reported in connection with the Pokrovsk offensive and the Battle of Toretsk.

It followed other reports from the preceding days. On 19 August 2024, Russia was reported to have captured the city of Zalizne and the Vyimka railway station in Donetsk Oblast. On 18 August 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed the capture of the village of Svyrydonivka, also in Donetsk Oblast.

Reading the sequence

Taken together, the reports from 18 to 20 August 2024 show three consecutive days of Russian territorial claims or reported captures in one oblast, while a separate strike hit a western city. For regional authorities, the demands differed sharply: in Donetsk Oblast the issue was control of settlements and a railway station, and in Ternopil it was the immediate safety of residents after an industrial fire.
