What the strikes on 19 and 15 November revealed about frontline regions

A look back at two incidents in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts reported in the days before 21 November 2023.

What did the reports reaching the public by 21 November 2023 say about life in Ukraine's frontline regions? Two incidents, in different parts of the country, stood out.

On 15 November, a Russian missile strike in Zaporizhzhia Oblast killed two emergency workers and injured seven others. The casualties were rescue personnel, people whose job is to respond to attacks on communities in the south.

On 19 November, the Ukrainian military shelled Russian-occupied Kalmiuske Raion in Donetsk Oblast. The strike hit a dance hall in Kumachove during a performance. About 20 Russian troops were reported killed, along with Russian actress Polina Menshikh.

The two episodes sat in different parts of the Eastern and Southern Ukraine campaigns. One fell on government-held territory and affected local emergency services; the other hit an occupied district in Donetsk Oblast. Both show how the war's effects reached regional settings far from central institutions, and how these places were exposed to strikes from either side.

Beyond the casualty figures, the reports gave little detail on the wider consequences for the regions concerned.
