What the war's cross-border strikes brought on 26 August 2026

A retrospective on a day of overnight drone attacks in Russia, a deadly strike on a bus in occupied Luhansk, and the toll of an earlier missile attack near Kharkiv.

What did a single late-summer day of the Russo-Ukrainian war look like across the border regions? On 26 August 2026, reports pointed to drone strikes in several Russian oblasts, a deadly incident in occupied Luhansk, and the aftermath of a Russian missile attack on Kharkiv two days earlier.

Overnight drone strikes in Russia

An overnight Ukrainian drone attack on 26 August was reported to have completely destroyed a Wildberries depot in Tambov Oblast. Separately, a man and a 14-year-old child were killed in Lipetsk Oblast, and a woman was killed in Belgorod Oblast, in Ukrainian drone strikes. The Russian defence ministry said its forces had shot down 426 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Such attacks were part of a pattern that had developed since Russia's full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022. The main targets have been the military, the arms industry and the oil industry, and many of the attacks have been drone strikes. Belgorod is among the oblasts that have also seen cross-border shelling and missile strikes.

A bus strike in occupied Luhansk

On the same day, nine people were killed after a Ukrainian strike on a bus in Russian-occupied Luhansk. The city lies in an area under Russian control. Luhansk Oblast has been the scene of a military campaign along a frontline in its western parts since 19 September 2022.

Kharkiv after the strike of 24 August

Two days earlier, on 24 August, a Russian missile strike on the outskirts of Kharkiv killed three people and left eight others wounded. Russian forces have launched numerous rocket attacks on the city since the 2022 invasion.

A day in a wider pattern

Taken together, the reports from 24 and 26 August showed civilians killed on both sides of the front line and beyond it, from Kharkiv to Lipetsk, Belgorod and Luhansk. The figures were those reported at the time, and the Russian defence ministry's count of downed drones was its own claim.
