What was the state of the war on 27 August 2024? Reports from that day and the days before it described renewed Russian strikes across Ukraine, continued Ukrainian operations in Russia's Kursk Oblast and a toll of civilian and journalist casualties.
On 27 August 2024, the Ukrainian military said it had captured 594 Russian troops and 100 settlements in Kursk Oblast since the start of the incursion.
The previous day, 26 August 2024, Russian missile and drone attacks resumed across Ukraine. At least six people were killed and five injured in Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhzhia.
Casualties on 25 August
On 25 August, overnight Russian attacks on Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts killed at least four people and injured 37. Strikes across the border in the north were described as a daily occurrence by Ukrainian officials, according to later background.
The same day, a Russian ballistic missile struck a hotel in Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast. A British safety adviser working for Reuters was killed and two other journalists were injured.
Russian officials said an overnight Ukrainian strike on Rakitnoye, in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, killed at least five people, including three children, and injured 13 others.
