What Ukraine's parliament and Kherson's mourners faced on 8 November 2018

A look back at a parliamentary resolution on a wartime-era deportation anniversary, and the death days earlier of an anti-corruption activist from Kherson.

What was on Ukraine's public agenda on 8 November 2018? In Kyiv, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on marking at state level the 75th anniversary of the start of the deportation of Ukrainians from Poland, which took place in 1944–1951.

The same week was shaped by news from the south. On 4 November 2018, Kateryna Handziuk, an anti-corruption activist, died of the injuries she had suffered in an acid attack in Kherson on 31 July.

The two items belonged to different spheres: one was a decision on historical commemoration taken by the national legislature, the other a death that drew attention to the fight against corruption in a regional city. Together they show the range of public life in Ukraine in early November 2018, from parliamentary business in the capital to events in the regions.
