Where did Europe's eastern pressure points stand on 21 November 2021?
A look back at the border crises, pipeline decisions and investigations that framed the days before 21 November 2021.

What was pressing on Europe's eastern edge on 21 November 2021? In the days leading up to that date, several separate disputes unfolded along the borders of Belarus, Russia and Azerbaijan, and in the politics of energy.
The Belarus border
The migrant crisis on the Belarus–Poland border dominated the preceding week. On 15 November 2021, the European Union said it would impose new sanctions on Belarus in response. The next day, migrants at a temporarily closed checkpoint in Kuźnica, Poland, threw stones at Polish border guards and tried to destroy the border fence. The guards responded with water cannons and tear gas. The Polish ministry accused the Belarusian military of aiding the attacks along Poland's borders.
The pressure spread to neighbouring states. On 17 November 2021, Estonia summoned 1,700 reservists for a snap drill, which was to include installing a 40-kilometre razor wire barrier along its border with Russia.
Gas and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline
On 16 November 2021, the German energy regulator suspended approval of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany. It said the pipeline had to comply with German law before the €10 billion project could be certified. Gas prices in the United Kingdom and the European Union rose by 17% that day.
The Caucasus
Also on 16 November 2021, border clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan left fifteen Armenian soldiers dead and twelve more captured by Azerbaijani forces. Both sides traded recriminations before a Russian-brokered ceasefire took effect at 19:00 local time.
An investigation
On 17 November 2021, Bellingcat and The Insider published the first part of their own investigation into the Wagnergate affair.
Why it matters in retrospect
Taken together, these developments show a region in which migration, energy regulation and armed border incidents were all live issues in the same few days. For a Ukrainian audience, they formed the backdrop to 21 November 2021: neighbouring states were reinforcing frontiers, sanctions were being prepared, and the future of a major gas pipeline had been put on hold pending legal compliance.
