A look back at a southern-front report on Ukrainian positions near Oleshky, filed days before the covered date.

What was known about the southern front on 27 April 2023? The most recent report available concerned the lower Dnieper, and it was not an economic story at all.

On 23 April 2023, the Institute for the Study of War and various Russian military bloggers reported that the Ukrainian military had taken up positions on the east bank of the Dnieper river, north of the town of Oleshky. The report formed part of coverage of the southern Ukraine campaign in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Institute for the Study of War is an American think tank, founded in 2007 by military historian Kimberly Kagan and headquartered in Washington, D.C. It has provided analysis of the Russo-Ukrainian war, among other conflicts.

The report did not address economic questions, and no economic figures or policy decisions were attached to it. It stands as a snapshot of how the situation on the Dnieper was described in the days leading up to 27 April 2023.
