What the Kyiv supermarket shooting meant for public life

A look back at the 18 April 2026 attack in Holosiivskyi District and how its toll was reported.

What did Kyiv know about the supermarket shooting by 24 April 2026? The attack had taken place six days earlier, on 18 April 2026, in Holosiivskyi District, and it remained the main event in the city's public life.

As reported at the time, six people were killed and 15 others injured, including a child. The gunman barricaded himself inside a supermarket and took hostages before police killed him.

The figures changed as the picture became clearer. Later accounts describe the attack as beginning in the Demiivka neighbourhood, where a man opened fire on his neighbours and passers-by in the street before moving into the supermarket. Those accounts put the final toll at eight dead, including the perpetrator, and thirteen injured. They also say the Rapid Operational Response Unit (KORD) stormed the supermarket and that the gunman died in a shootout with police.

Why it matters

The episode involved police response, hostage-taking in a commercial space and harm to civilians far from the front line. The sequence from street shooting to siege is the core of what is known: an attack on residents, a retreat into a shop, and an armed assault by a specialist unit that ended it.
