Economy on 13 January 2020: gas pipeline and airline loss

Posted: | Filed under: Economy | by Borderland staff

A look back at the economic and transport news that framed 13 January 2020, from TurkStream to the Tehran crash of a Ukrainian airliner.

What was shaping the economic picture as of 13 January 2020? Two items from the preceding days stood out: a new gas route into south-eastern Europe and the loss of a Ukrainian airline's passenger jet near Tehran.

On 8 January 2020, the heads of state of Turkey, Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria formally inaugurated the TurkStream gas pipelines.

The same day, a Boeing 737 operated by the airline MAU (Ukraine International Airlines) crashed near Tehran, in Iran. All 176 people on board died.

On 11 January 2020, the President of Iran officially acknowledged that Iran's armed forces had shot down the aircraft by mistake with a missile. The admission came three days after the crash and set the context for 13 January 2020.

The reports from those days do not set out economic consequences of either event, and this retrospective does not assign any. They show what was in the news: a pipeline launch involving four governments and a disaster involving a Ukrainian carrier, with Iran's acknowledgement of responsibility.
