A look back at reports of a Ukrainian foothold north of Oleshky, filed on 23 April 2023 and carried into the next day.

What was happening on the Dnieper's east bank on 24 April 2023? Reports from the preceding day, 23 April 2023, pointed to a Ukrainian presence on ground that had been on the Russian-held side of the river.

According to the Institute for the Study of War and various Russian military bloggers, Ukrainian forces had taken up positions on the east bank of the Dnieper, north of the town of Oleshky. The account formed part of the wider southern Ukraine campaign in Russia's full-scale invasion.

The Institute for the Study of War is an American think tank founded in 2007 by military historian Kimberly Kagan and headquartered in Washington, D.C. It has analysed the Russo-Ukrainian war, among other conflicts.

The positions north of Oleshky were a notable detail in the southern campaign, since they placed Ukrainian troops on the river's eastern shore.
