What did 12 October 2022 bring for Ukraine's civilians?

A look back at a market strike in Avdiivka and Russia's listing of Meta Platforms a day earlier.

What did the news record on 12 October 2022? In Donetsk Oblast, Russian forces struck a marketplace in Avdiivka, killing at least seven civilians and injuring eight others. The attack was reported as part of the wider pattern of strikes on civilians during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and as fighting continued in the Battle of Donbas.

A day earlier, on 11 October 2022, Russia added Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, to its list of "terrorists and extremists". The stated grounds were that the company tolerated Russophobia and allowed calls to violence against Russians.

The two developments, reported on consecutive days, showed the war's reach beyond the front line: one in the casualties of a civilian marketplace, the other in a decision aimed at a major technology company.
