A look back at the economic and public-policy items surrounding 24 January 2022, from a proposed economic passport to pandemic testing supplies.

What was shaping Ukraine's economic and public-policy agenda on 24 January 2022? Several items stood out in the days around that date, and they were modest in scale but concrete.

An economic passport moves forward

On 20 January 2022, the Verkhovna Rada's committee on financial and tax policy backed a bill on an economic passport for Ukrainians. The proposal had been announced in December 2021. The committee's vote moved it a step along the legislative path.

Pandemic supplies arrive

Also on 20 January 2022, two million rapid COVID-19 tests reached Ukraine. UNICEF bought the tests, worth more than seven million dollars, and delivered them to Kyiv. The purchase was funded with support from the World Bank and carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. The arrangement combined international financing, a UN agency's procurement and domestic health authorities.

Public broadcasting and Eurovision

On 24 January 2022, the national public broadcaster announced the list of finalists in the selection for Ukraine's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. It was a cultural item rather than an economic one, but it was part of the public agenda that day.

Taken together

The items show a policy agenda built from parliamentary committee work, externally financed health procurement and routine public-institution announcements. The committee vote on the economic passport bill was the main legislative step, while the test delivery showed the World Bank and UNICEF working with Ukraine's Ministry of Health.
