What the Kyiv supermarket shooting left behind by 21 April 2026
A look back at the 18 April 2026 attack in Holosiivskyi District and the toll recorded by 21 April.

What was known in Kyiv by 21 April 2026 about the mass shooting that had struck Holosiivskyi District three days earlier? The attack, on 18 April 2026, was an outbreak of violence in the Demiivka neighbourhood, and it was far removed from the usual economic agenda of the capital.
As reported at the time, six people were killed and 15 others were injured, including a child. The gunman barricaded himself inside a supermarket and took hostages. Police killed him.
Later accounts described the sequence in more detail. The man first opened fire on his neighbours and passers-by in the street before entering the supermarket. The Rapid Operational Response Unit (KORD) stormed the building, and he was shot dead in a shootout with police. Those later accounts put the death toll, including the perpetrator, at eight, with thirteen others injured.
The supermarket, a commercial space in an ordinary residential district, was where the hostage-taking ended.
