What the news record showed in Ukraine around 28 September 2022

A look back at two reports from the days before 28 September 2022, one on a Donetsk market and one on Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner Group.

What was in the news as Ukraine's war entered its second half-year on 28 September 2022? Two reports from the preceding days stood out.

On 22 September 2022, authorities of the Donetsk People's Republic accused Ukraine of shelling a market in Donetsk, saying six civilians were killed. The claim came from the self-declared authorities themselves.

On 26 September 2022, Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, publicly admitted for the first time that he had founded the Wagner Group. The private military company has been accused of war crimes in places where it was deployed. Prigozhin had previously denied any involvement with the organisation.

The available reports from those days concern the war and Russia's use of private military force rather than economic policy.
