A retrospective on the Holosiivskyi District attack of 18 April 2026 and how its reported toll was described.

What did the public know about the Kyiv supermarket shooting by 20 April 2026? The attack itself took place on 18 April 2026 in the Holosiivskyi District of the capital, and reports from that day set out its basic outline.

As reported at the time, six people were killed and 15 others were injured, including a child. The gunman barricaded himself inside a supermarket and took hostages. He was killed by police.

Later accounts gave a fuller picture of the event. They place it in the Demiivka neighbourhood and say the man first opened fire on neighbours and passers-by in the street before entering the supermarket. According to those later accounts, he was shot dead in a shootout when the Rapid Operational Response Unit (KORD) stormed the building.

Those accounts also revised the figures. They put the death toll at eight, including the perpetrator, with thirteen others injured. The difference from the initial numbers reflects how the count was described afterwards, compared with the first reports of six dead and 15 hurt.

The case was categorised among incidents of terrorism in Ukraine in 2026.
